About this project
A garden can be a lovely place to sit long after the strongest sunshine has passed. For this Mullingar installation, we combined a wide retractable awning with lighting built into its arms and front edge.
The canopy is 5m wide and extends 3.5m outwards, giving the garden an area of overhead shade when the awning is open. When more daylight is wanted, it can be retracted. The anthracite frame gives the installation a dark, understated finish.
Making room for everyday garden use
A shaded place to sit is often most useful when it remains flexible. You may want cover above a table at lunchtime, then prefer a more open view later on. A retractable canopy allows that change without putting a permanent roof across the garden.
For a similar garden, start with the furniture rather than the wall alone. Think about the chairs when they are pulled out, the route back indoors and the time of day you usually sit outside. Those details help turn an attractive awning into a useful part of the space.
Solution and installation
Lighting is part of the awning itself, so the same feature that provides shade during the day can also bring light to the space in the evening. This installation includes motorised operation and a wind sensor. The photos show the finished combination of canopy, frame and integrated LEDs.

FAQ — Mullingar, County Westmeath
Where are the lights on this garden awning?
LEDs are fitted in both the arms and the front of the awning, rather than at just one edge.
Does the garden have to stay covered all the time?
No. The awning is retractable, so the canopy can be opened when shade is wanted and closed when it is not.
Should I choose the awning size from the wall width alone?
Include the area you want to use below it. A table, chairs and walking space help establish the useful canopy size; the final mounting position needs to suit the building as well.
